The Church of San Luca

A fantastic feature of Palazzo San Luca is that we literally neighbour the Church of San Luca. Built in Romanesque Venetian style probably before 1072 by will of the Dandolo and Pizzamano family, the church was sadly destroyed by a fire in 1167.  Efforts to rebuild, redecorate and expand the church continued until the 19th century and you can now view it in its fully restored form!

You can enter both by the side entrance just next-door to the hotel or round the corner through the main doorway.

Despite its small size and simplistic façade, the church opens into a beautiful interior and above the main altar you will find an outstanding work of art by the renowned Venetian painter Paolo Veronese, The Virgin appears to St. Luke as he writes the Gospel, of the 16th century. Tradition wants us to believe that St. Luke was the first man to ever paint the Virgin Mary, reason for which he is also considered to be the patron of painters, not just one of the four evangelists.

I would highly recommend you visit the church, especially as it is just next-door! While entrance is free, church communities always welcome cash donations to help with maintenance.
