Historical Joshghan Glacier: an architectural masterpiece in the heart of the desert

History:

Historical Joshghan Glacier, which dates back to the Safavid era, is located in the village of Joshghan Strak. At that time, the local rulers ordered the construction of this refrigerator for the well-being of the people and the supply of ice needed in the hot seasons of the year.

Architecture:

Joshghan Glacier with its unique architecture is an example of human adaptation to the desert environment. This building is made of materials such as clay, brick and plaster and has a large dome and a deep tank.

Refrigerator tank:

The reservoir of the boiling refrigerator is dug in the ground as a deep pit and its walls are insulated with materials such as clay, brick and plaster. The thickness of the walls and the large dome of the glacier have helped to preserve the ice throughout the year.

Performance:

In winter, the water from the boiling aqueducts was directed to the glacier and froze in shallow ponds. Then the ice was collected and stored in the refrigerator tank. In order to keep the ice cool, the door of the refrigerator was closed during the day and the door was left open at night due to the cold weather.

In the past, boiling refrigerator ice was used to cool drinks, preserve food, and for medical purposes. Ice has also been used to cool homes in the hot seasons.

In the past, people used refrigerator ice to keep perishable foods like meat and dairy products cool. For this, ice was wrapped in a cloth and placed next to the food.
